3 Signs You Need to See a Headache Specialist

A headache can manifest in many forms. It may be quick and mild or it may cause immense pain for consecutive days. In some instances, it may be moderate but unexpectedly prolonged. Despite the variations in its severity and duration, a headache should never be taken lightly.

In some cases, a headache is a symptom of a serious underlying condition. If you continue to sideline it and avoid getting treated, the accompanying condition will most likely worsen and take a toll on your physical, mental, and emotional health.

We’ve rounded up three critical signs you need to see a headache specialist.

1. You Keep Having the Same Headache

When it comes to headaches, consistency is a big red flag. No matter how mild your headache may be, if it keeps reoccurring, you should consult a specialist. They’ll determine whether you’re experiencing tension headaches (regular headaches), migraine headaches, or cluster headaches. Based on the diagnosis, you will be treated accordingly.

2.Your Headache is Accompanied by a High Fever

If your fever is greater than 102–104° F (39–40° C), your body is fighting a serious illness or infection. Call a headache specialist at the earliest.

When accompanied by a high fever, headaches can indicate a serious condition like encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membrane surrounding the brain). If left unattended, the potential condition can gradually worsen.

If you’re experiencing neck stiffness on top of a fever and a headache, don’t take any chances and schedule an appointment with your doctor.

3. You’re Having Vision Problems

If your migraine is triggering vision problems, you’re likely having spasms in the retina. Don’t take blind spots, blurriness, flashing lights, or temporary and mild blindness lightly. You may have low blood sugar or be at risk of having a stroke. Consult your doctor and discuss your symptoms in detail.
