Treatment for Cluster Headaches in LA

Cluster headaches start suddenly, are very painful, and last for a limited time. These are the most painful type of headaches and occur cyclically. A usual bout of attack can last for a few days or even months. Following this cycle, there are periods of remissions that can last for months or years.

According to the World Health Organization, cluster headaches affect around 1 out of every 1000 people and are more common in men than women. The National Organization for Rare Disorders states that the onset of cluster headaches lies anywhere between 20 and 40 years of age.

Despite the severity of its pain, a cluster headache is not life-threatening. Medications and treatments reduce the duration and severity of the headache.

Unlike a migraine headache, symptoms of a cluster headache develop quickly and without warning. These include excruciating pain around or behind one eye which may radiate throughout the face, restlessness, drooping eyelid, swelling around the affected side, runny nose, sweating, pale skin, one-sided pain, and excessive tearing.

Since cluster headaches occur cyclically, they can begin during the start of a season such as every fall or spring. The headaches can occur several times a day, last anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 or 3 hours, and usually take place during the same time each day.

We’re not sure what causes a cluster headache but research has identified a link between an attack and increased activity within the hypothalamus, the area of the brain responsible for controlling hunger, temperature, and heat. During a cluster period, alcohol, strong smells, or cigarette smoke can trigger an attack.

There is no known cure for cluster headaches. Treatments are aimed at reducing the severity and duration of the attack. Acute treatments include inhaling pure oxygen and local anesthetics, preventive treatments, and in rare cases, surgery.
