Treatment for Blepharospasm in LA

Blepharospasm refers to a rare eye condition that causes the eyelids to twitch or blink. It’s uncontrollable, that’s why it’s also called involuntary twitching or blinking and is caused by muscle spasms around the eye.

Blepharospasm occurs due to abnormal brain function in the region of the brain responsible for controlling muscle. Symptoms can even be triggered by things as minor as high caffeine use or sleep deprivation. However, the underlying cause could be serious neurological conditions including Parkinson’s disease or Tourette syndrome.

According to the National Organization for Rare Disorders, around 2,000 new cases of Benign Essential Blepharospasm (BEB) are diagnosed each year in the United States. The disease affects women more than men.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a cure for Blepharospasm, but there are multiple treatments that can decrease its severity. Certain injection-type medicines like botulinum toxin or Botox temporarily weaken the eyelid muscles. Patients can also take oral medications; however, the effects are short-lived and symptoms usually return.

Dr.Farzin Pedouim is a board certified neurologist based in Huntington Beach and Los Angeles. He makes use of effective drug therapy and surgical procedures such as myectomy surgery that removes some of the nerves and muscles of the eyelids to alleviate the symptoms
