Deep Brain Stimulation Treatment for Dystonia in LA

DBS or Deep Brain Stimulation is a surgical procedure that is effective in treating symptoms of Dystonia. It works especially well for patients suffering from an inherited (idiopathic) form of the condition. In certain cases, conventional treatment options including oral medication and Botox injections fail to produce the desired result. For such patients and those with dystonic tremor or cervical dystonia, DBS provide adequate relief.

The effects of Deep Brain Stimulation Treatment are most effective if the affected person is young. Ideally, the treatment should be given a few years after the onset of the symptoms.

DBS involves inserting two insulted, thin electrodes into the brain which are connected to a battery source. The wires transfer electrical pulses aimed at disrupting the signals responsible for causing the symptoms of dystonia.

The involuntary muscle contractions are stopped using minute, carefully controlled electrical currents. As a result, dystonic tremors and/or abnormal postures can be eased. Additionally, DBS treatment reduces pain.

Before the treatment, a rigorous assessment and selection process is carried out to determine whether the DBS treatment is suitable for the patient or not.

Dr. Farzin Pedouim is a board-certified neurologist and based in Huntington Beach and Los Angeles. He provides DBS treatments and as well as expert advice that help patients deal with Dystonia.
