Treatment for Stroke in LA

A stroke occurs when a person experiences a reduced or interrupted blood supply to part of the brain, depriving it of vital nutrients and oxygen. Anyone experiencing a stroke requires immediate medical care which, if delayed, can result in potential complications and brain damage.

Thanks to advancements in research and technology, fewer people die due to strokes as compared to the past. According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), almost 800,000 people experience a stroke in the U.S each year 140,000 of which prove to be fatal.

Just a few minutes after a stroke, brain cells begin to die due to glucose and oxygen deprivation. Delaying medical attention can lead to permanent brain damage or even death.

If you suspect someone of having a stroke, pay close attention to these symptoms:

  • Numbing or partial paralysis of the arm, face, or legs:Sudden development of paralysis, numbness, or weakness in the arm, leg, or face. Usually, this happens on one side of the body. Ask the affected person to smile. If one side of the mouth droops, that’s a sure sign of a stroke.
  • Trouble with speaking:The person may suffer from confusion, slur their words, or have difficulty understanding speech.
  • Trouble with walking:The person starts to experience dizziness, loss of coordination, or loss of balance.
  • Headaches:A sudden, severe headache usually coupled with dizziness, an altered consciousness, or vomiting.
  • Trouble with the vision:Blackened or blurred vision in one or both eyes. The person may even start to see double.

Strokes are caused by leaking or bursting of blood vessels (hemorrhagic stroke) or blocked arteries (ischemic stroke). Sometimes, the disruption of blood flow is temporary in which case the condition is termed as a transient ischemic attack (TIA).

The treatment options for stroke are numerous and depend on the type of stroke the patient has experienced.
