Treatment for Ischemic Strokes in LA

Strokes occur when there is an interrupted or reduced blood supply to the brain. An ischemic stroke develops due to a blockage in one or more of the arteries around your brain.

According to the American Stroke Association, 87% of all strokes are ischemic strokes. Also, the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control list strokes as the fifth-leading cause of death in the country.

Ischemic strokes happen due to an excessive buildup of cholesterol plaque inside the blood vessels. The plaque collects in a single spot which leads to blockages.

Numerous factors contribute to ischemic strokes including smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol levels, Being obese or overweight, maintaining an unhealthy diet, ignoring exercise, atherosclerosis, and crossing the 55 age mark.

An ischemic stroke can develop in different parts of the body and occurs due to two different types of blockages: an embolic stroke and a thrombotic stroke. In an embolic stroke, a piece of plaque, blood clot, or any other object travels to and enters the brain’s blood vessels. In a thrombotic stroke, a clot forms inside a brain’s blood vessel.

Symptoms of an ischemic stroke include paralysis or weakness in the limbs, dizziness, vertigo, confusion, drooping of the face on one side, loss of coordination, and vision problems.

The first and most important goal of doctors when treating a stroke patient is to restore heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing. The primary treatment method for stroke is called a tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) which helps to break up blood clots inside the vessels.

Other treatments methods include the use of anticoagulants and surgical procedures. Dr.Farzin Pedouim is a board certified neurologist based in Huntington Beach and Los Angeles. He uses both invasive and non-invasive methods to produce the desired results and help patients get back on track.
